2011 Florida Senior Games State Championships

Polk County
December 3-11, 2011

Florida's favorite centenarian, Roger Gentilhomme, featured in Documentary

The feature documentary AGE OF CHAMPIONS, a film celebrating the charm and spirit of America’s senior athletes, comes to Tampa’s Straz Center for Performing Arts for a special, one-day-only screening event on Monday, March 21st.

Film star Roger Gentilhomme, a 101-year-old tennis champion and Tampa-area resident, will make a special appearance at the event.

AGE OF CHAMPIONS is the story of a group of athletes — Florida’s favorite centenarian, Gentilhomme, an 86-year-old Texas pole vaulter, two swimming brothers and a team of basketball grandmothers — all chasing a dream at the National Senior Games.

The film captures the triumphant spirit of these seniors who tackle old age with grace, humor, and optimism. They are fiercely competitive in their sports, but win or lose, they inspire us all to pursue our passion and find purpose at any stage of life.

Dunedin tennis star Roger Gentilhomme has recently appeared on Martha Stewart Living and Regis & Kelly. He was awarded the 2006  Florida Senior Games State Championships Athlete of the Year Award by Governor Charlie Crist, inducted into the Senior Hall of Fame, and has competed in senior tennis tournaments around world. In June, he will head to Houston, Texas, where he will be the oldest athlete competing in the 2011 National Senior Games, at 102 years old.

Roger will take questions from the audience following each screening of the film.

The Straz Center event will feature a free Senior Health Fair from noon to 8pm, with screenings of the documentary AGE OF CHAMPIONS at 3:30 and 6:30pm. Activities will include a Q&A with the filmmakers, lecture by Dr. Mike Murray on healthy aging, and a live demonstration by the Tigerettes, six-time senior women’s basketball national champions and characters in the film. The Health Fair is free and open to the public; film tickets are $10 at the door or $8 online at www.documentaryfoundation.org.
