Apocalypse Regains No. 1 Ranking 

After finishing the 2005 season ranked number one, Apocalypse, from Pompano Beach, has regained that position for the second time this year.  Apocalypse won a hard-fought Palm Bay State Ranking Tournament by playing, and defeating, four exceptional teams.

In the first round, Apocalypse defeated the Bodysnatchers, who later made it to the finals of the B Division, 38-15.  They then won a nail-biter with 11th-ranked Dominos, 27-25, and finished up with victories over 10^th-ranked Palm Beach   Knights, 36-6 and second-ranked C.O.D., 20-13, in the finals. 

Quarterback Brian Baer, who racked up 121 points leading the offense summed up the level of play at the Palm Beach SRT.  "There are no easy games anymore,” he said.  “The parity in the SRTs is quite evident.  Anyone in the top 10 can win on any given day." 

In the championship game, Apocalypse built a 12-6 lead, but quickly found themselves down, 13-12.  After a late C.O.D. score with 3 minutes left in the game, Apocalypse QB's Brian Baer and Dave Gies engineered a clutch drive to score and complete a two-point conversion to give Apocalypse a 20-13 lead with 36 seconds remaining.

Walt Williams, QB of C.O.D. started a final drive, but was intercepted by Apocalpyse linebacker, Derell  “Fifty” Hubbard, the game MVP.  The interception was aided by pressure from rusher Todd Jones.

The game was punctuated with a great deal of high-spirited fun and good-natured trash-talk between the teams who know each other well.  Four C.O.D. players have played with Apocalypse in the recent past.

"As a result they know our offense and defense well, said Craig Miller, coach of Apocalypse. "C.O.D. has exceptional, smart athletes who played us hard and could have won the game if one or two plays had gone another way.”

Offensive standouts included Dave Gies, Jason Weese, Quinton McClendon, Steve Davis, Derrick "Hollywood" Brown, Keith McKeithen, Todd Jones and Brian Baer.  But it was the rejuvenated defense, led by signal caller Ruben Hamm, who led Apocalypse to the tournament championship.

“Danny Lamboy did a great job rushing all tournament," said Coach Miller.  "As anyone in this league will tell you, a good rusher makes the whole defense look better and defense was our key to victory in this tourney."  Lamboy had several drive-crippling sacks in the tournament, plus a diving, knock-down of a TD pass in the championship game while playing linebacker.
