Miami Whitecaps Water Polo wins two gold medals
The Miami Whitecaps Water Polo program had three teams competing in
the 2010 Sunshine State Games Water Polo Championships, in Pompano
Beach, and players from the three teams came home with two gold and
a silver medal. The
Men’s Open and Boy’s 18 and Under teams went undefeated in their
divisions and the 14 and under Coed team came up short in the
Championship Game to win the silver medal.
Over the course of the weekend, the three Whitecaps teams combined
for a 10-1 record. The
Whitecaps 18 and under Boys and Men’s Open teams are coached by
Osvaldo Garcia, Sr., a former Cuban National Team coach who defected
to the United States in 1995. The 14 and under team is coached by Luis Martinez, who also
serves as an assistant coache for the Boy’s 18 and Men’s Open teams.
The trio of medals is the most won by the Whitecaps program
since it began competing in the Sunshine State Games in 2006.
This is the fifth consecutive year a Whitecaps team has won
medal in the annual Water Polo Championships.
“We’re a very new team, no more than 5 or 6 years old,” said
Whitecaps founder Julio Lopez.
“We’ve come a long way in a short amount of time.”
The Whitecaps train at
the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, home of the undefeated
2009 Florida High School Water Polo State Champions.
At least three of the state championship team members
competed in the Sunshine State Games this weekend, according to
Lopez. Jake Bakas,
currently playing at Fordham University, was a member of the Men’s
Open team while goalie Carlos Padron and Will Johnson, a 2010
First-Team All-Dade Water Polo selection by the Miami Herald, played
for the 18 and under Boys team.
The host team South Florida Water Polo Club
won four team medals with a gold, silver and two bronze, including a
third consecutive gold medal in the 14 and under Coed Division.
South Florida won a silver in the Women’s Open and bronze
medals in the 18 and under Girl’s and 16 and under Boy’s divisions.

The calendar comes to a close next weekend when the Water

The Varsity

Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.
The Cowboys won a pair of one-run, come-from-behind games on

the semifinal and the Florida Pokers Navy 9-8 in the Championship

a pitch and stole second base.
He scored when on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Mitchell
Martinez that resulted in a throwing error at third base.
In both Sunday
games, the Cowboys were trailing 6-4 as late as the fifth inning.
In the semifinal win against the Hitting Zone Hurricanes,
Kevin Rodriguez hit a two run home run in the bottom of the sixth
inning to tie the game.
The winning run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Siegal while
pitcher Eric Collier held the Hurricanes scoreless in the seventh
and eighth innings. The
majority of the Cowboys roster is made up of players from Tampa
Gaither High School.

The two-highest
rated Table Tennis players in Florida were among 74 athletes
competing at the Simpson Park Community Center and squared
off in the Open Division championships.
Kit Jeerapaet, of Tampa, defeated Vinay Desai (pictured
at right), of Pembroke Pines, in the final match in four games.
11-year old Desai won the gold medal in the Under 2500

Sunshine State Games recognizes a pair
of legends in their sport
As Florida’s Sunshine State Games returns to its
roots in Alachua County to celebrate more than three decades of
amateur sports competition, the Florida Sports Foundation recognizes
two individuals whose talents elevated the annual Games to its
current status.
Since the
Games humble beginnings in 1980, when 12 sports made up the roster
of events, two individuals, Mary Rose, of Altamonte Springs and Tim
Austin, of Gainesville, witnessed first-hand the evolution from the
1980s into the 21st century.
The 2010
Games will be without the services of Mary Rose, the veteran
Synchronized Swimming Sport Director, who passed away in November,
2009. She was the face of Sunshine State Games Synchronized Swimming
and will be forever etched in the history of the Games with the
debut of the Mary Rose Synchronized Swimming High Point Award
presented this year.
A trio of
awards will be presented at the end of each daily competition
recognizing the highest individual score of the Novice, Intermediate
and Age Group swimmer.
As a
coach, Rose was asked in an interview what was needed to become a
synchronized swimmer, Rose simply stated, ``The only requirement I
make is that they aren’t afraid of the water.’’
Now
entering his third decade of service to the Sunshine State Games,
Tim Austin, a Gainesville native and Archery Sport Director, will be
recognized for his ongoing dedication to a sport which, to him, is
more a way of life.
Florida’s
“Man of Archery,” as he is known to his fellow archers, is making a
triumphant return to the field at the Sunshine State Games after a
recent staph infection may have knocked him down but not out. He
will be presented with an award recognizing his service on Saturday
morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Easton Newberry Sports Complex.
Besides
his work with Florida’s Sunshine State Games, he serves as the sport
director and participant in the Florida Senior Games State
Championships. So sought after are his talents as an administrator,
he has been called upon by the National Senior Games to serve as the
sport director for many years in locations around the country. Other
national events have come to him to serve in the same capacity.
The
talents and service of the individual sport directors are what makes
Florida’s Sunshine State Games possible. From spreading the word
about the Sunshine State Games and recruiting participant to the day
of event, the sport director is vital in the success of the Games.
Individuals like Mary Rose and Tim Austin are rare finds and
athletes in Florida have benefitted from their service to the
Sunshine State
Games.
A brief
description of what goes on in Synchronized Swimming
Provided by Donna Foust, Synchro Parent
For spectators unfamiliar with the sport, synchronized swimming
is similar to figure skating or gymnastics in that athletes
execute a powerful illusion. Don't be fooled by the glitter of
the costumes or what seems to be ease of motion in the
well-rehearsed routines. Synchronized Swimming is a sport
requiring grace, strength, stamina, and precision. Judges score
athletes on how well they execute sophisticated choreographic
elements above and below the water.
Interested fans have the chance to see teams from
all over the state including the Flagler County Belles, Lakeland
YMCA Flamingos, Tampa Bay Synchrays, Team Orlando Loreleis,
Tallahassee Serinas, Sunshine Synchro Splash, Miami Waves, Palm
Beach Gardens Synchro, New Tampa YMCA, Shining Stars, Palm Beach
Coralytes, Palm Coast Auroras, SASSY, Miami Little Feet, Team
Florida (Masters) and the local host team, the Gainesville Gaviatas.
Performers will showcase skills in solo, duet,
trio, and team routines. Novice competition will be on June 11,
Intermediates will compete June 12 and the Age Group division will
compete on June 13.
Admission is free. Routine competitions should
begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, and at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and
Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
Synchronized swimming is a year-round fitness
opportunity. Developing the discipline and skills to perfect these
choreographic elements above and below the water results in
excellent cardiovascular and muscular strength. Synchronized
swimmers learn individual body control as well as develop a sense of
reliability that comes from being part of a team.
Ultimate of Sunshine State Games Ultimate
Since the inception of Ultimate as a sport of Florida’s Sunshine
State Games in 2006, the annual tournament showcased a gathering of
the state’s best talent.
Now in the fifth year of competition, the 2010 field may be
the most talented to date.
Returning to defend their overall top finish from 2008 and
2009 is the ‘Merica team from Jacksonville (AKA Jukebox Hero),
playing in USA-themed attire.
Among the 16 teams competing are three Gainesville area teams
with past Sunshine State Games success.
The Sweet Chili: Throwback team won the gold medal in the
2007 Games and the HHH (Hungry, Hungry Humans) team won a gold medal
in 2006, a silver in 2007 and came in 5th place in 2008. The Big
Pwnrs team features members of the 2010 University of Florida team
that won the 2010 College Championship on June 2, in Madison,
Wisconsin.
Of the 16 teams registered, the majority are very
experienced, with roughly half of the teams having a chance of
finishing first overall, according to Sport Director, Kristin
Deffler, of Fort Lauderdale.
Competition begins at the Jonesville Soccer
Complex on Saturday and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with Championship Games
being played on Sunday at 4:15.
Tallahassee swimmer brings plenty of experience to Gainesville
Although only 20 years old, Tallahassee’s Joe
Ziegler nearly misses being the oldest swimmer racing at Northside
Pool. Only one other
swimmer is older, by one year.
Currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama and a
graduate of Tallahassee Leon High School, Ziegler recently completed
his sophomore season in Tuscaloosa.
During the 2009-10 season, he posted the team’s best times in
the 200 Freestyle (1:36.48) and 200 Backstroke (1:46.18).
In 2007, while at Leon, he was named Florida Swimmer of the
Year by two different organizations.
He earned a
spot on the
USA National
Junior Team from 2006-08 and qualified for the USA FINA Youth World
Championship Team in 2006 and 2008. As part of the U.S. National
Junior Team, Ziegler competed at the 2008 Victorian Championships in
Melbourne, Australia, winning gold in the 800m freestyle relay and
silver in the 400m freestyle relay.
Florida’s top racquetball players gather
at the Sunshine State Games
Finding 10 individuals, in
one location, who are ranked among the top five in their field would
be considered quite an accomplishment.
This year’s Sunshine State Games Racquetball competition
takes it a step further with 13 players ranked in the top five of
their age groups by the Florida Racquetball Association.

Hatters Gold go for third consecutive
gold medal in Polk County
The Sunshine State Games Fast Pitch Softball
Championships feature an 18-team bracket in the 16 and under
division with teams from the extreme west part of the state (Sudden
Impact, Navarre), extreme east (Florida Select, Jacksonville) and
extreme south (South Florida Stinger, Homestead).
One team stands out due to its past successes
even before reaching the 16 and under level.
The Hatters Gold team, with players from Brevard County,
Ocala, Tampa and the Orlando area, won gold medals in the 2008 and
2009 Sunshine State Games in the 14 and under division.
Coached by Bill Horwath and Eddie Wylie, the
Hatters Gold team is built around a core of five players who were
members of the last two gold medal-winning teams.
Hannah Horwath, Chelsea Wildey, Xio Perez, Brittany Wylie and
Kelsey Carpenter will be on familiar turf this weekend in Polk
County in hopes of a third Sunshine State Games medal.
The Hatters Gold have won eight consecutive Games in Sunshine
State Games competition defeating the Gainesville Gold each of the
last two years.
The Sunshine State Games will be the fourth of
eight tournaments this summer for members of the Gold.
Since hitting the field in mid-May, the Hatters won a
pre-qualifying tournament in Jacksonville and an ASA qualifying
tournament in Clearwater.
Following the weekend in Polk County, the team
travels to Clermont for competition, then to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
for competition at the Hall of Fame Stadium. Before returning home, the team will travel to Boulder,
Colorado for an Independence Day Tournament.
The summer schedule wraps up, the first week in August, with
the 16 and under ASA National Tournament in College Station, Texas.
When it’s all said and done, the Hatters could
play as many as 40 games between May and August, according to Coach
Eddie Wylie.
Gainesville Area Rowing informs the
masses
Members of Gainesville Area Rowing spent last
weekend at Newnan’s Lake promoting their sport on “National Learn to
Row Day,” on Saturday, June 5.
This weekend, they get to show what they know at the Sunshine
State Games.
Adults, High School and
Middle School students learned what it takes to man an eight person
racing shell on National Learn To Row Day, with an open house and
rowing lessons at the Newnan’s Lake boathouse. Instruction was
provided by Gainesville Area Rowing’s professional coaching staff
and accompanied by experienced Masters.
Gainesville Area Rowing won two team gold medals
at the 2009 Sunshine State Games and Brian Motyer, of Gainesville,
won an individual gold medal in the Men’s Ltwt 1X event.
Motyer, 46, will compete in five events in 2010.
The Orlando Rowing Club and Edgewater Crew also
hosted a “National Learn to Row Day” event at Lake Fairview in
Orlando.
Sunshine State Games Archery venue supports youth
programs
Since the Easton Newberry Sports Complex opened in October of 2009,
the Easton Foundations Archery Center has become a cornerstone of
the facility and a hotbed of youth archery in Florida.
The multi-million dollar facility caters to training archers
and coaches in all styles of archery using the latest techniques and
technology.
The complex includes 100 acres of mixed use
recreation field, archery ranges, wooded trails, 3D courses and an
indoor archery range.
To further the sport of Archery, the Complex also
hosts programs such as After School Archery, Junior Olympic Archery
Development, Adult Archery Leagues and Classes and Summer Archery
Camps. In October, the Easton Newberry Sports Complex will host the
Easton Foundations Gator Cup.
Earlier this year, the
2010 Florida National Archery in the Schools Program state
tournament was held at the complex featuring elementary, middle and
high school competition.
How many different
communities have hosted SSG Events in 2010? The 2010
Calendar of Sunshine State Games Events saw more locations than any
other year in the three decades of competition.
Overall, the 27 sports will be held in 17 different Florida
communities.
Instead of holding one Summer Games Festival as
in previous years, the annual Olympic-style Sports Festival was
divided into two locations, Alachua and Polk County.
This was done to feature more Florida facilities better
suited for certain sports.
Besides the Summer Games Festivals, six
individual sports festivals dotted the calendar in May and June.
The Figure Skating Championships were held in Coral Springs,
Rugby Championships were played in Plantation and Youth Basketball
Championships was held in Gainesville during the month of May.
In June, the Inline Hockey Championships will be held in Fort
Myers, the Fast Pitch Softball Championships in Polk County and the
Water Polo Championships in Pompano Beach.
The Sunshine State Games Sport Shooting
Championships, which attracted nearly 600 shooters over two months
of competition in April and May was held at 8 different locations.
The Sunshine State Games Academy Soccer Festival was held in
Boca Raton.
Besides the Lacrosse competition taking place in Gainesville this
weekend, the Sunshine State Games Lacrosse Series was played in
Parkland in May and will be played in Wesley Chapel in July.
